The Sombrilla Yurac Yacu Youth to Youth tour was an opportunity for Canadian youth to travel to our project in Yurac Yacu Peru and to have a hands on experience in International Development. The goal was for young adults to learn about sustainable development, to build relationships with Peruvian youth and to work side by side with community members to carry out a service project.
Several youth from the Yurac Yacu community, and from Ayacucho Peru, were chosen to travel and participate with the Canadian groups, fostering an opportunity for the Peruvian youth to act as hosts and interpreters for the Canadian youth as they learn about Quechua culture and the projects going on in the community.
Through the pre-departure training, as well as debriefing upon their return, the students were supported in understanding these new experiences as well as learning more about the work being done by Sombrilla and our Peruvian partners. The participants were expected to take part in an orientation the day before they left on the trip and a debrief session approximately two weeks after their return. They were also expected to take part in at least one public presentation on their return in order to share with others what they had experienced and learned on their trip.
