DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique Peruvian holiday celebration\, Chocolatada!\, on December 4th\,2022 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm on 11421 77Avenue\, Edmonton Alberta. Gather with us to drink a hot chocolate\, enjoy chocolaty treats\, children’s games and activities to build friendships. Come for 15 minutes or several hours!  This event will help us raise funds to benefit Sombrilla projects in Peru and El Salvador.\n\nWe have been fortunate over the years to have the opportunity to be connected with a rural Andean community in Peru. Our involvement with the community has enriched the lives in many ways\, one of the fun celebrations we have taken away from there is the Chocolatada.\n\nSombrilla crafts will be on display\, we’ll have fair trade chocolate for sale\, and donations to Sombrilla projects will be gratefully accepted.

In 2014\, Yesenia was invited by Sombrilla to come to Canada to speak about Sombrilla’s projects in her community. Over two weeks she engaged with many children\, youth and adults in a variety of settings around Alberta. Yesenia will talk about how Covid has affected her community and the preschool in particular. She will also share with us some of the ways she has been able to continue to work with the children and their mothers during a lengthy quarantine. \n  \nAll Sombrilla members in good standing can vote and become a member for $10. A variety of backgrounds\, skill sets and perspectives are valued. The term of office is 1 year. DESCRIPTION:100 Mile House – House Concert\nSupporting Education in Tierra Colorada\, Guatemala \n\nWe are really excited to be hosting a house concert with 100 Mile House in August. The concert will support our education project in Tierra Colorada Guatemala. \n100 Mile House is  husband and wife duo Peter Stone (UK) and Denise MacKay (Alberta). A journey that started with a mistaken meeting at a show in Toronto 13 years ago has led the couple to share their unique brand of transatlantic folk at shows and festivals across this great continent. 100 mile house were winners of the Emerging Artist Award at the 2014 Edmonton Folk Music Festival\, and their previous two albums\, Wait With Me (2013) and Hollow Ponds (2011)\, have garnered three WCMA nominations\, two Calgary Folk Festival Songwriting Grand prizes\, two Edmonton Music Awards and have received airplay across the globe\, from the BBC in the UK to Germany\, Holland and France. It has also taken them to the stages of some of Canada’s biggest festivals including the Edmonton\, Calgary\, Canmore and Vancouver Folk Festivals. DESCRIPTION:After a delicious dinner catered by Café Bicyclette\, keynote speaker\, Lewis Cardinal\, took the stage to speak about the importance of walking in partnership with indigenous cultures both here at home and globally to build a more sustainable future for everyone. \nAudience members also enjoyed a fabulous selection of items to bid on in the silent auction\, as well as a riveting live auction both to raise money for Sombrilla’s development projects. \nThe Sombrilla Board of Directors would like to thank everyone who attended the International Dinner\, as well as all our supporters\, donors and sponsors. Sombrilla raised over $18\,000 from this dinner and we couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you for all of your continued support. \nYour support will help us to continue with each of our ongoing projects. Some of the things we accomplished with your help are funding 150 pessaries for women in Ayacucho and Marian Peru\, A year of school for 20 junior high school children in Tierra Colorada Guatemala and support for 2 students in El Salvador to continue their post secondary education. \nWe all look forward each year to this evening when we get to meet so many of our supporters. \nThe 2018 International Dinner marks our 30th anniversary celebration!
